Distance beneath an Electric hob

Hi guys

I went into a studio apartment the other day and it had a 2 way electric hob in the kitchen surface which had a fridge below it. The clients were saying that the electric was tripping when they had the hob on but not all the time, just every now and then. So on further investigation i pulled out the fridge to get beneath the hob to find that the top of the fridge had been melting and had burn marks on it. The fridge was pretty tight to the bottom of the kitchen top and the bottom of the hob was pretty much flush with the bottom kitchen top aswell. So theres probably only about 2-4mm distance between these. Now obviously this is not good and ive recommended a different layout of the kitchen and to try get the hob above some cupboards where theres a bit of space for the heat to disperse but my question is, what is the minimum distance allowed between the bottom of a hob and anything underneath it? Ive searched the internet and found no results for distances underneath. Also wondered if you could have a heat shield below the hob maybe to stop it burning anything below it but maybe this would trap the heat in and deteriorate the hob quicker?

Any advice on this would be great

Thanks

Steve
